History and Focus

The history of SCB Solutions started in the 1990's when the founders, working together with an outstanding team of fellow associates at the smart card division of Groupe Bull, began developing the US smart card market. Our support to the financial, campus, healthcare and access control industries was vital in their success.

When the division was acquired by another company, we saw the direction of the industry changing because of consolidation and a narrow focus toward inbred products. This approach abandons a large segment of the market that has a need for experienced professional development support, pre-sale and post-sale technical consulting and a suite of products that are open to using a wide variety of platforms.

To address this change, a core of the US team formed SCB Solutions with the intent of continuing smart card growth through flexibility, outstanding customer service, superior technical skills, integration to legacy systems and sourcing the most current and cost effective products and services.

And, as the need for identification, authentication and rights management has become so critical in our world today, SCB Solutions is ideally suited to be the company that brings smart identification to corporate America.

What we do

HSPD-12 - Smart card solutions
HSPD-12, a directive from the US President mandating a common identification standard for all federal government agency employees and contractors and, FIPS 201, a new standard released by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have changed the landscape in the identity world.

HSPD-12 established deadlines for adoption of the new identification mandate. As promptly as possible, but in no case later than eight months after the release of the standard, or by October 2005, executive departments and agencies are required to use the standard for identification issued to federal employees and contractors to be used for both physical access to federally controlled facilities and logical access to federally controlled information systems.

FIPS 201 is a new government-wide reliable Personal Identification Verification (PIV) for government employees and contractors.

SCB Solutions' offering for the federal government

SCB Solutions, with its headquarters a stone's throw away from the Mall in Washington, DC, is ideally situated to help federal agencies and their contractors deploy this challenging project. By having already integrated the most secure and the most interoperable smart card platform in its SCB Access security application, SCB Solutions is in the ideal position to propose a meaningful and efficient deployment of logical access solutions for the government.

SCB Solutions offers to the agencies

  • Consulting services: PIV deployment will be a major project in every agency requiring unprecedented coordination between Human Resources, Security and IT.
  • Multos smart cards.
  • Single Sign-On with SCB Access™.
Implications for the Identification World

FIPS 201 provides a framework for local government and any corporation that requires secure identification.

It provides a solid unified standard that can be adopted by local governments or by any corporation that requires strong identification of its employees.

SCB Solutions can help you to define a system that will take advantage of this new standard but will still keep in mind the size of your organization.
Consulting
SCB Solutions works hand-in-hand with its customers to improve their business through integration of the identification and access solutions.

Smart cards and other identification technologies bring a new dynamic to an issuing organization. The processes are not as simple as choosing a type of card or particular manufacturer. A platform decision marries you to a specific path for a long time. You want to make sure it is done right.

Beyond the decision to implement a smart card or identification application, is an increasingly complicated array of processes, decisions, and logistical issues that need to be considered.

SCB Solutions is an expert in smart card and identification applications and will guide you in:
  • Acquiring the correct platform,
  • Specifying what product(s) will meet your needs,
  • Evaluating product offerings,
  • Integrating to your current and future systems and
  • Deploying to cardholders.
SCB Solutions will give you the necessary support throughout the project:

We are independent of the chip manufacturers and not biased toward one platform over another, other than the BEST platform to meet the applications and business needs of our clients.
Smart Card Personalization
Personalization is a key component in a successful smart card program.

Personalization is the operation that transforms a generic card into an individually specific card that can be used in one or more applications. Personalization usually includes one or several types of personalization, each of which may be done in different stages.

The main types of personalization are:

  • Electrical personalization: loads application codes, user data and cryptographic keys within the chip.
  • Magnetic personalization: encodes the magnetic strip with user data.
  • Graphical personalization: the printing or embossing of text or pictures on the card and associated carrier product(s).
Beyond the personalization process are the fulfillment and deployment services necessary to complete the program. SCB Solutions' expertise and experience in these processes, as well as our ability to consult regarding the options and outcomes, is among the most complete in the industry.

Personalization Outsourcing

Personalization is a key phase in the card life cycle. It is a process that has immediate and long term effects that need to be well considered and planned. Personalization can be accomplished in-house through acquiring the necessary equipment or outsourced by using a professional service bureau. Both cases present advantages and drawbacks. SCB Solutions will evaluate the best options for its customers. Depending on the industry, client needs and business case, recommending the correct personalization facility or process is the result of experience and industry knowledge. SCB Solutions will offer an objective evaluation of the several choices. If outsourcing appears to be the best solution, SCB Solutions will present itself as a possible provider. Or, we may offer consulting services to help negotiate the best solution(s) to meet the client objectives. Otherwise, SCB Solutions can provide personalization equipment and the required consulting to set it up.
Distribution Services
SCB Solutions is in a unique position to help international companies with smart card technologies enter the US market. Using SCB Solutions as a distributor gives quick access to a broad market.

SCB Solutions will create product visibility by:

  • Locally commercializing products
  • Attending meetings, conferences, trade shows and association meetings as representatives of its international partners
  • Integrating, if possible, the products to SCB Solutions' and/or client products
  • Training our indirect channels to support the products
But most importantly, SCB Solutions works with its international products' partners in the best and most honest sense of the word “partnership.”
